Vintage Indian Clothing

A brief and non-linear pictorial history of Indian fashion. And the women who are much more than their (often) fabulous clothes.

My "avatar" is usually a photograph of the actress Kanan Devi.

Atin is the foppish aristocrat while Ela belongs to the party of the people. She is pictured on a crowded third class deck, wearing a sober brown sari made of inexpensive khadi suggesting identification with the masses

Stills from Elar Char Adhyay, based on Tagore’s last novel. They seem to have used the template of the wide border plain sari and long sleeved blouse (right down to the cloth buttons on the blouse) throughout the film (the actress in the stills is Paoli Dam).

An earlier film version of the novel.
